I had some free time today so I got a massage.
After today's session, I know I will be sore tomorrow and it's ok, but I wanted to share why it is that sometimes, we get sore after a session and also what you can do to minimize the after effects post massage.
When you get a relaxation massage, the chances of feeling sore the next day aren't as high as if you get a deeper therapeutic one. It's very much like doing a workout. The harder the workout, the more tired you will feel. Also, if the muscles aren't used to massage, they often respond with more soreness. Like exercising, after a few sessions, your muscles will get use to it and won't be as sore. The soreness shouldn't last much more than one or two days. If it lasts longer, the therapist should adjust his/her pressure the next time you see him/her.
So what can you do to minimize these painful side effects?
First, it's important to communicate with your massage therapist during the session regarding your expectations, the pressure, as well as if somethings does not feel right.
Drink a lot of water immediately following your treatment and throughout the day. This will rehydrate your tissues and help flush the toxins out of your body.
Rest. Go home, relax . Your muscles have just been worked, just like an intense workout. Now is the time to recover.
Ice. Just like after exercising, icing is recommended to lessen the immediate soreness. The cold should help to reduce the pain by numbing the area.
Take a bath and add some Epsom salts. The salts will get absorbed through your skin and help relax your muscles by flushing lactic acid buildup. Magnesium is also known to have an important role in the absorption of vitamins. It also helps regulate muscle and nerve function therefore has an effet on muscle stiffness.
